Wood Block Print by Kunio Kaneko
This original wood cut print is titled in pencil "Fuji" and is numbered 155/200. It is dated 1984 and has the artists chop and pencil signature. The print is done in shades of amber, red/orange with applied gold leaf. I have not removed it from the frame but it appears to be in very good condition. The image measures 4" X 5 7/8" with the framed piece measuring 9 1/2 X 11 1/4". On the back of the frame there is an envelope from the gallery which has the original receipt as well as a sheet with information on the artist and his showings. The gallery frame is complimentary to the piece with 2 small dents to one edge and a small scrape to the gold leaf being the only damage note.
Kunio Kaneko was born in Tokyo in 1949 and studied at the Musashino University of Fine Arts. He has a well established reputation from a number of exhibitions in New York, Tokyo and regional Japanese cities. His work blends the classic traditions of the japanese woodblock print with a modern approach to color and texture. His use of gold leaf in the coloring of his prints has a very effective impact.
